Very Good

Light Type: 5mm LED
Light Class: Outdoor / Rough Use / Etc.

Short Description:

The Infinity Ultra is a very tough general purpose light. It is made from Type II anodized aluminum with a gray matte finish. 1 AA alkaline battery powers the light for many hours. Inside the bezel is a 5mm LED which is powered with a step-up regulator. It produces a smooth spot of white light. The tailcap is the switch; twist for on and off. 1 AA battery is included and is replaced by removing the tailcap. A removable clip is attached to the side.

Beam Profile

Detailed Information:

The Gerber Infinity Ultra is a compact, convenient light with excellent runtime and bright output. They have taken the original CMG Infinity Ultra (Gerber acquired CMG) and have given it a style to match their other aluminum lights.

The body of the Gerber Infinity Ultra sports a gorgeous Type II anodized matte finish. The surface appears to have a very slight granularity to it which makes it look very modern and sleek. Around the head and tail are ridges raised above the curved surface which facilitate grip and add to the overall appearance. From a durability standpoint, the Infinity Ultra can take almost anything you can throw at it. It is very strong and only suffers from minor surface damage when abused.

Inside the head is the 5mm LED and step-up circuit. The LED is very deeply recessed and it would be very difficult to damage it.

Output is in the form of a very pleasing white light. The beam itself consists of a roundish hotspot with some typical LED artifacts in the center, surrounded by a round spillbeam.

The switch is the tailcap. Twist for on and off. There is also a lanyard hole in the tailcap for convenience. Several readers have reported to me that if you turn the tailcap until it just turns off you can use the tailcap switch as a momentary switch by pressing in on it with your thumb. Sure enough, it works! Thanks all!

Beam quality is the same as nearly every other single white LED light. No issues there. Slightly bluish center as to be expected.

Changing the battery is very simple. Unscrew the tail, drop out the old battery, and place a new battery in positive-side first. Screw the tail back on and you are ready to go. A battery change could be easily accomplished in the dark. The Ultra appears to be able to accept Lithium AA cells for brighter output and greater resistance to cold.

Runtime:

Runtime completed with Rayovac brand alkaline battery. More information on runtime plots is available HERE.

Water resistance is very good, with the light being able to withstand 10' of depth (advertised). The Ultra is equally at home whether you are hiking, camping, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, or white water rafting.

I think it is important to note that unless you are of a large built, this light is a little big for everyday carry in the pants pockets.

What I Liked: Watertight, Tough/impact resistant, Long battery life, Easy battery change, Lightweight

What I Didn't Like:

Other Things I Noticed: Removing the clip marks up the surface of the light pretty badly.

Conclusions: Very good little pocket light. The new finish is very nice and the output is about the same as the original CMG version. Not so much an improvement over the original CMG version as much as a change in style.
