Reviewer's
Impressions:
The CMG Infinity Ultra is a great "High Output"
option that compliments but doesn't replace the original Infinity.
A compact, convenient light with excellent runtime and bright
output. If you found the original Infinity to be too dim for
your purposes, but you liked the form factor, you'll love
the Ultra.
Fit and finish of the Ultra is excellent. The anodize on the
body and head are flawless. As with the original Infinity, the
LED is slightly off center in the bezel, but this is of minor
concern. The threads are very smooth and clean with no burrs.
The threads and O-ring are lubricated at the factory. The knurling
is even and is of medium pattern. There were no sharp edges
on the sample reviewed.
From a durability standpoint, the Infinity Ultra can take
almost anything you can throw at it. It is very strong and
only suffers from minor surface damage when abused. The LED
is very deeply recessed and it would be very difficult to
damage it. Overall quality is excellent.
Output is also very good for a single LED light. The Ultra,
like the standard Infinity, has a step-up circuit built into
the head of the light. The difference is that the Ultra is
tuned to put out much more light (28 Lux vs. 6 Lux on new
batteries) at the cost of battery life. The Ultra is advertised
as providing light for 25 hours as opposed to the 40 hours
achieved by the original Infinity.
Beam quality is the same as nearly every other single white
LED light. No issues there. Slightly bluish center as to be
expected.
Changing the battery is very simple. Unscrew the head, drop
out the old battery, and place a new battery in negative-side
first. Screw the head back on and you are ready to go. A battery
change could be easily accomplished in the dark. The Ultra
can be used with Lithium AA cells for brighter output (32
Lux) and greater resistance to cold.
Water resistance is very good, with the light being able
to withstand 30' of depth. The Ultra is equally at home whether
you are hiking, camping, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking,
or white water rafting.
I think it is important to note that unless you are of a
large built, this light is a little big for everyday carry
in the pants pockets. For camping or hiking I think I would
prefer the Ultra over the original Infinity simply because
the extra light output would be useful in more situations.
Installing a Lithium AA (10 year shelf life) would help make
the Ultra a perfect addition to a "bugout bag".
Improvements: The only possible improvements I can envision
would be designing the light so that it can stand on it's
butt end and giving it a Level 3 Hard Anodize finish for durability.
Other than that, it's excellent.
+ + + Pluses: Waterproof, Tough/impact
resistant, Long battery life, Bright, Easy battery change,
Lightweight
- - - Minuses: Cannot stand on end
