Short Description:

The Tektite KnifeLite is a single LED light with a flat tipped knife blade retracted into the handle. The stainless steel blade slides forward and locks in place for use. The LED light has a switch on top which can be pressed inward for momentary use or clicked forward for constant-on use. Inside, two lithium coin cells power the single 5mm white LED. The body is made from glass filled nylon and includes a lobster claw clip and a split ring keychain.

Reviewer's Impressions:

Since this is a flashlight review site and not a knife review site, I will not be commenting on the knife part of the keychain very much. Suffice to say that it is 1.25 inches in length, made of stainless steel, has a flat tip that can be used as a light duty screwdriver and seems to be tough enough to use for most tasks. It does lock in place via the slider tab that must be pressed inward to release the blade. The LED portion of the unit is another story. Output is good, but it has some fairly significant problem areas.

The body of the unit is made of glass filled nylon, making it very tough and durable. There are finger grooves molded into the body for grip when used as a knife.

The body can be opened up by removing 5 tiny screws on the side of the light. Upon removal, the switch on the top of the unit springs out, giving some indication of how interesting it will be to put it back in when reassembled. Inside you will find two 2025 lithium coin cells that power the unit. Removing and replacing the batteries themselves is easy. Realigning the two halves of the body while holding the switch and the little D-ring at the end in place is an exercise in patience.

At the end of the light is a single white 5mm LED protruding slightly from the case. Output is typical of a single LED light, producing a directional smooth flood of light.

As mentioned earlier, the switch can be pressed inward for momentary use, or slid forward for constant-on use. The switch is very sensitive and the slightest amount of pressure causes it to activate. Gripping the case in your hand to use the knife even causes it to turn on. As for sliding it forward, you have to grip it by placing your fingernail in one of the two grooves in the switch. The switch will then snap into place.

Overall durability seems good, but the unit is not water resistant at all.

I really don't know what else to say about this unit. I feel that it's too big for a keychain, the switch is too sensitive to keep it in your pocket, and the light shines above the knife blade so it does not effectively illuminate the surface you are cutting. A nice little novelty gift, but in my opinion, that's about it.

+ + + Pluses: Tough, Lightweight

- - - Minuses: Not water resistant, Difficult battery change, Very sensitive switch.
