Description:
High quality flashlight manufacturers have a little
trick up their sleeve that you may not even be aware
of. Many of them use glass lenses made of special compounds
or are specially coated to improve light transmission
from their flashlights. The benefits of these glass
lenses is threefold. First, more light can be transmitted
through glass than most plastics that are used for inexpensive
flashlight lenses. This means more light coming out
of the end of your flashlight. Second, glass lenses
are much more scratch resistant than plastic, and that
spiderweb of scratches that forms on the plastic lenses
will scatter the light instead of letting it go where
you need it. Third, high intensity lithium powered lights
can melt plastic lenses if they come on accidentally
in their belt sheath or if left on for extended periods
of time. Glass has much greater high temperature tolerance
and won't melt under these circumstances.
Until recently you would have to buy a quite expensive
flashlight to get the benefits of having a glass lens,
but now they are available separately.
FlashlightLens.com
produces high quality replacement glass lenses for several
manufacturer's flashlights. Now you can buy a less expensive
light, add a Flashlightlens.com lens and gain all the
benefits of having a glass lens.
Currently FlashlightLens.com uses 3 types of glass,
each with its own benefits.
Borofloat is a form of borosilicate glass similar to
Pyrex.. Borofloat is extremely temperature resistant
and won't shatter if your hot flashlight is dropped
into a cold stream.
B270 Superwite is the most scratch resistant glass
replacement lenses that they have with better transmission
than the Borofloat, almost matching that of the UCL
lenses.
UCL (Ultra Clear Lens) transmitts over 99% of all visible
light. This means that you will be getting the most
light possible out of your flashlight. These lenses
are also coated to be anti-reflective, water repellent,
and anti-glare. These coatings allow the lens to remain
a optically clear as possible under a wide variety of
conditions.
