Light Type: Incandescent
Light Class: Outdoor / Rough Use

Short Description:

The Tec 40 is a small incandescent light made by Princeton Tec. It is intended a bright, reliable, small, general purpose light which can survive rough environments and the challenges of diving. It comes in several body colors and includes a nylon lanyard and batteries.

The body of the light is a tough plastic with a clear bezel surrounded by a rubber guard. The batteries are loaded into the body in 2 rows side-by-side. This gives the body a flat appearance. The bezel is sealed with an o-ring giving it a depth tolerance of 2000'.

The bulb is a high intensity halogen. The reflector is textured to minimize the appearance of beam defects and it is pre-focused to create a rather smooth, tight spot.

The light is turned on and off by twisting the bezel. Unscrew the bezel completely to change the batteries.

The Tec 40 runs on 4 easy to find AA batteries (included) for a runtime of 3-5 hours.

You can purchase separately a low output bulb that will run for 8 hours on a single battery change. You can also get a red lens cover separately.

Reviewer's Impressions:

The Princeton Tec Tec 40 makes an excellent camping/fishing/outdoors light. This has quickly become one of my personal favorites. It puts out about the same light as a 3-D Mag at about the same cost but a fraction of the size and weight.

I also consider the Tec 40 to be about as close to an alkaline battery powered E2 as you can get. In the same brightness category as a Surefire E2, but with a slightly more narrow beam. It has a small form factor for having 4 AA batteries crammed into it and produces a nice spot of light

The battery change is very easy. Pull out the reflector/switch assembly. Dump out the old batteries. Put 2 AA batteries in one side either both + up or down. Put in the other 2 batteries the opposite way. It doesn't matter which side of the light you make + or - as long as the two sides are opposite polarity. The reflector only goes back in one way.

There's not much more to say about this light. Get one.

I believe the Tec 40 will displace almost all your other incandescents for everyday use since it's so bright and inexpensive to run. I would recommend this light for just about any outdoor sport or endeavor.

+ + + Pluses: Inexpensive, bright, lightweight, good beam, decent runtime, watertight, cheap batteries.

- - - Minuses: Cannot stand on end.
