Light Type: LED
Light Class: Keychain

Short Description:

The Petra-Tek Keychain light is exactly as its name states - a keychain light. This light is available for purchase from Pocketlights.com. It is a very inexpensive single 5mm white LED keychain light.

The body of the Petra-Tek is made of translucent plastic with a metallic finish plastic momentary-only switch in the center of the light. There is a translucent colored panel on the front and back. The Petra-Tek is available in yellow or blue. The body has a molded-in loop at the end where a small split ring connects the light to a larger split ring keychain. On the back, 4 screws can be seen which hold together the clamshell body. Removing the screws allows for a change of the batteries. There are no seals in the light, but it fits together fairly well and should survive a splash or two with no issues.

The white LED output is a bit dim for a keychain light, but the beam produced is perfectly smooth.

The switch is a momentary only switch that "clicks" when pressed and released.

For batteries, the unit takes two 2016 lithium coin cells. This is pretty much the standard for keychain LED lights. 4 screws must be removed from the back of the light to change the batteries.

After opening the body the batteries can be found in a white carrier which appears to self-destruct when you remove the LED to get to the batteries. A small metal plate falls in your lap. This metal plate needs to be replaced on the bottom of the battery carrier and held in place by the LED lead. Look at both sides of the battery carrier for orientation details before removing the LED to change the batteries.

Accessories: Batteries and split ring keychain are included.

Reviewer's Impressions:

Well, the Petra-Tek Keychain light is a keychain light. That's about it. It's inexpensive and would make a nice little gift add-on for friends or relatives. It is extremely lightweight, but a little larger than most other keychain LED lights. I think it kind of neat looking and the case lights up a bit when you turn it on.

Fit and finish are ok. The parts seem fairly tight due to the screws used to hold the unit together, but there is a large gap around the LED. It's an inexpensive plastic keychain light with no attempts to disguise it as anything else.

Quality / Durability / Construction are all OK It's so lightweight I doubt it would suffer any damage if dropped. I was able to step on it with all my weight on a hard wood floor with no damage.

Output is surprisingly poor for a single white 5mm LED light, weighing in at only 7 Lux at one meter. I don't know why the output is so much lower than the other keychain lights I have tested that run on two 2016 batteries. The only thing I can think of is that they are using lower output, less expensive LEDs to keep the cost down.

Beam quality, however, was very good. This LED produces the nicest, smoothest beam I have ever seen from a single white LED. No rings, no artifacts, just a beautiful smooth uniform spot of light.

Water resistance is negligible. A splash shouldn't harm it, but I wouldn't expect it to take much else without water saturating the inside of the case.

Battery life is not listed, but I would expect it to be similar to most other 2016 powered LED keychain lights. Since these lights are so inexpensive, I would dare say you can consider them "disposable" and simply buy another one or buy several at once so when one dies you can just replace it with another.

+ + + Pluses: Impact resistant, Lightweight

- - - Minuses: Not very water resistant, Dim, Difficult battery change, No constant-on switch
