Detailed
Information:
The Pelican MityLite Plus LED 2AA is a cute little
light. It feels good in the hand and it has an absolutely
great clickie switch. Output is a bit weak. As-is it
would serve well during complete power outages, out
in the woods, or in other "extreme dark" situations
where the eyes can adjust to its output. However if
there is any significant amount of ambient light its
usefulness becomes questionable as it is easily overpowered.
The body of the Pelican MityLite LED is made of a Xenoy
polymer which is very tough and is resistant to a wide
variety of chemicals. It is octagonally shaped which
makes it easy to grip and is quite comfortable to use.
It comes in black and high visibility yellow. The light
can be used in helmet clamps and has various hazardous
location use ratings. On the side is a clip with gripping
protrusions molded in and a lanyard hole drilled in
a tab below the head.
The bezel uses a plastic lens which is sealed with
an O-ring. Inside is the textured, silvered, plastic
reflector in which you can see the 3mm LED used for
light. The LED has been specially shaped to take advantage
of the reflector and it sends much of its light out
to the sides where the reflector can gather the light
and project it forward. The beam produced is like a
little bullseye with a bright center, a dark ring and
then a bright ring around that. Further out is a dim
spillbeam.
The switch is on the tail of the light and is behind
a small red cover with rings molded into the rubber
for texture. This switch is one of the nicest clickie
tailcap switches I have used. It has a good solid click,
good feedback and is neither too difficult or too easy
to activate.
Water resistance is provided by O-ring in the head
of the light. It is not rated for diving.
The MityLite LED takes 2 AA alkaline batteries for
power. Batteries are included. Advertised runtime is
65 hours. There is no indication that any regulation
circuitry is used, but since the LED is running off
of only 3 volts I think it is safe to assume that there
is a boost circuit in the LED/reflector assembly (3mm/5mm
white LEDs generally run on 3.6 to 4.0 volts and will
barely light on 3 volts).
What I Liked: Water resistant, Tough/impact
resistant, Long battery life, Easy battery change, Lightweight,
Great clickie switch.
What I Didn't Like: Poor output - very dim.
Good for use in a completely dark environment or very
close work only.
Other Things I Noticed: Probably uses a boost
circuit, but no documentation confirming this could
be found.
Conclusions: It's funny to me that another light
I reviewed from Pelican recently - the Super Sabrelight
2020 LED had great output and a horrible body design
(in my opinion), and here we have a little light with
a great body and switch design and output is absolutely
pathetic! Pelican just seems to keep missing the mark!
I was really expecting more output and although the
MityLite LED has a 65 hour runtime, I really think that
if they were to increase brightness about 6 times and
therefore reduce the runtime to around 10 hours, it
would have been much more useful as a general purpose
light. Great if you are in complete darkness and need
a very long burning light, but otherwise a bit dim for
general use.
