The Peak LED Solutions "Pacific" is a cute
little keychain light which utilizes a Luxeon I LED
and a regulator circuit in tandem with a single AAA
alkaline cell to produce good output for over 2 hours.
Two body materials are available - Type III anodized
aluminum (reviewed) and solid brass, with stainless
steel expected soon. Additional bodies are available,
including a 2 AAA body, an AA body and a CR2 body.
(packaging example - unit shown is not the same as unit
reviewed)
The body of the unit is machined aluminum with a Type
III anodize finish - very tough stuff. Three bands of
checkering surround the body. There are 6 flat facets
machined into the side of the head that go from the
bottom of the head to the half-way point. At the very
front of the head are 3 grooves. At the tail end of
the light is a removable keyring/lanyard attachment
post. It can be unscrewed from the body to provide a
flat bottom for tailcap standing. An O-ring provides
resistance to prevent the tail post from unscrewing
by itself, but the body is sealed regardless of whether
the post is in place or not.
The bezel contains a reflector, Luxeon I LED, and a
current regulating circuit (the best kind of regulator)
to provide constant energy to the LED over the usable
life of the battery. The smooth silvered reflector provides
a surprisingly nice beam.
Output is nice and smooth. You'll find a central spot
with a fading corona surrounded by a wide spillbeam.
Overall output is more than sufficient for common close
tasks. The beam itself is in the form of a smooth spot
with a tapering corona and wide spillbeam. The color
of the light is excellent. It was white with no tinting
at all in the sample tested. Overall output with just
one AAA cell (reading taken with new cells) is better
than that of a Minimag AA or AAA.

Runtime Plot: With a single alkaline AAA cell,
you should get about 1.5 - 2 hours of good light before
you see a sharp dropoff as a result of the light dropping
out of regulation. After that the light output diminishes
over time, hitting 25% at about 6 hours. With the optional
2 AAA cell body you'll receive very good regulation
from two alkaline AAA cells for about 2.5 hours before
the light drops to a very low level. This long, dim
"tail" gives you enough light to root around
and find replacement cells for your light, or provides
emergency level lighting for a long period of time

To turn the light on and off, simply twist the bezel.
Tighten for on, loosen for off. Turning resistance is
provided by a single O-ring in a groove which is quite
sufficient to prevent accidental turning.
The light is completely sealed with O-rings and other
rubber seals for water resistance. I'd classify it as
dunkable. Shake it off and keep going.
Ergonomics: It's a tiny little light but easy to use.
Easy to grip, easy to operate.
Size compared to a common 2AA aluminum light. 2-AAA
body in middle for size comparison.
A single AAA alkaline cell powers the light, but you
can use NiMH or L92 lithium AAA cells. To change the
battery just unscrew the head, drop out the old cell,
and place a new one in negative first.
Accessories: A pocket clip is included with the body.
It's a chromed clip similar to a ballpoint pen, but
stronger.
What I Liked: Water resistant,
Tough/impact resistant, Semi-Regulated, Good battery
life, Good output, Easy battery change, Lightweight,
Removable lanyard lug
What I Didn't Like: Nothing
Other Things I Noticed: Nothing
Conclusions: Great little pocket/keychain
light. Bright, long lasting good output, and built pretty
tough. Extremely lightweight, very compact. A solid
pocket light with sufficient light and runtime for almost
any common tasks where you would use a small flashlight.
Where do I see it being used? I think this would make
a good replacement for a AA Minimag, especially with
the two-cell body.
