Short Description:

PALights are made by PALight - a division of Safelight Industries. PALight was recently acquired by Safelight and is now under new management. PALights are intended for just about any purpose when a small light is needed, except for underwater activities.

The PALights come in three varieties: Survival (unit reviewed), Workman, and Selector. The Survival has the following modes: On low, on high, strobe. The Workman has 'on high' only with a 25 minute auto shutoff. The Selector allows you to press and hold the switch which causes the light to start dim and become progressively brighter. Releasing the switch keeps the light at the selected brightness level. All PALights have a "constant glow" feature when turned "off". The minimal light produced serves as an easy way to locate the light and although it does slowly wear down the battery, it will stay in this mode for about 2 years before battery replacement is needed.

The body of the PALights is soft rubber. They come in a variety of colors including black, red, blue, green and marine orange. The dorsal and ventral sides of the light (top and bottom when lying on its largest side) are textured with a diamond pattern for grip. The body pulls apart in the center for insertion of the included battery. There is a metal strap around the center that helps hold the light together. It is removed by pressing in at the indicated point to release a small catch. The tail end of the light has a metal lanyard loop in a recessed area. The loop is held in its stowed-away position by a small raised protrusion molded into the body. If the light is used without a breakaway safety lanyard, the lanyard loop will will pull completely out of its attachment sockets (and can be reattached later) if the light is snagged and pulled hard enough. Since the whole body is rubber, the light press-fits together rather well and naturally resists the entry of water into the light.

Light is produced by a single surface mount LED. PALights are available with LEDs that produce white, blue, red or green light. The lens is simply pressed into a groove and held in place in the front end of the light. It is protected by raised areas on the body which also has a groove molded in so that a signaling cone can be attached in front of the lens. Behind the lens is a reflector made of white plastic to aid in the focusing of the beam. There is no need in actual practice to ever remove the lens or the reflector since the bulb never needs replacing. The light beam produced is very narrow and throws a nice spot with slight bluish artifacts around the very edges of the spot.

The switch is surrounded by a raised rubber ring to prevent accidental switching. Pressing and releasing the switch cycles the light through its various modes in series. For the PALight Survival; 1st press = low, 2nd press = high, 3rd press = strobe, 4th press = "off" (constant glow locater).

The PALights take a standard alkaline 9v battery (included) for 2 years of constant glow and various lesser runtimes based on the modes selected, the least being 40 hours on "high".

Included with the PALight Survival is a reclosable plastic pack, the battery, instructions, a red signaling cone and a breakaway lanyard.

Reviewer's Impressions:

The PALight Survival by Safelight Industries is a great little light in a convenient package. It has features that make it a reliable all-purpose personal lighting device. A good candidate for use as a common household or glovebox light, as well as for use around the campsite.

The fit and finish of the PALight reviewed was quite good with no obvious defects in this area. All of the parts fit together tightly and since the body is all rubber it naturally seals itself against the elements fairly well.

The PALight appears to be very durable. Since the body is made of soft rubber, it handles drops (or perhaps I should say "bounces") without any difficulty. The lens is recessed behind a raised lip, protecting it from anything except direct impact from a protruding object.

The plastic focusing lens on the unit reviewed did have some minor imperfections, but these seem to have little or no effect on the light output. The soft rubber body makes the light comfortable in the hand and easy to grip. The central metal band is easy to remove for battery replacement, but I would recommend only sliding it up or down the body a little bit to avoid bending it too much.

Light output is good, and is exactly what would be expected from a single white LED behind a focusing lens. The light is sent out in a narrow, focused beam which allows it to light more distant objects than other single white LED lights. On the down side, you may need to scan the light around a little to get a clear picture of what you are looking at since there is little or no "secondary beam" around the central bright area.

The various lighting modes that are available serve different purposes. The dim setting is sufficient for lighting when the eyes are partially dark adapted or when battery conservation is necessary. The bright setting is good for most short to medium range tasks. The strobe setting is good for getting attention, especially when the light is either pointed directly at the subjects you are trying to get the attention of, or when the included red cone is placed on the light. The "constant glow" locater feature has its advantages and disadvantages. If pointed up at the ceiling it acts as a good night light for the kids (or anyone for that matter) once the eyes are dark adapted. Some people may find it to be too bright to keep on the nightstand. I found that I could actually use the dim glow for navigating around in my house at night. It provided just enough light to help me avoid banging my shins on the furniture.

Beam quality is relatively good, with just a little bit of blotchiness and a few "beam artifacts" around the central beam (see beam picture, above).

Although I would not purposely throw this light in a pond or stream, it should be able to survive this treatment provided it is fished out and shaken off. All of the parts fit together tightly and since the body is all rubber it naturally seals itself against the elements fairly well. I would have no reservations about taking the light out in the rain.

The lanyard that comes with the PALight is of good quality and has a breakaway safety latch. The plastic pack that the light comes in is reclosable in case you want to keep the entire package together in an emergency kit for the household. A number of other accessories, including belt sheaths, magnetic bands, and belt clips are available.
