Light Type: Cree XR-E LED
Light Class: Outdoor / Specialty

Body: The battery tube of the M20 is mostly covered in a bold, checkered texture with two flat faces where branding is printed on. It provides good grip, yet not as rough as fine, diamond-textured knurling. There's a raised lip towards the front end which ensure that you hand doesn't slip over the head when using the light in self defense. A 4-point scalloped ring screws on to the rear end which serves two purposes. Firstly, it acts as an anti-roll feature so the light doesn't accidentally roll off surfaces such as the hood of a car. Secondly, it helps when holding the M20 in a cigar-style grip. This ring might be uncomfortable to some who prefer to hold flashlights in an overhand grip, so it's a good thing that it's easily removable. In addition, there's also a removable clip which allows the M20 to be carried head down if you decide not to use the included holster. Speaking of which, the holster has elastic pockets on either side for storing spare batteries. A battery magazine is also included for use with either 16340 or CR123 cells to prevent them from rattling inside the main battery tube. Threads on either end of the battery tube are smooth and well-cut, no problems here. There are also two rubber o-rings placed on each end providing better seal over the usual one. The tail of the M20 has a similar checkered textured design, and has shallow scallops machined around the end. The pre-installed black rubber push button cap protrudes out the rear end so the light won't be able to tail stand, an advantage to this is that it makes the switch easier to engage. Alternatively, you may swap out the black switch cap with the low-profile GITD spare one which is included. With this installed the M20 is able to tail stand. The switch used is a forward push button so momentary activation is possible, and you won't have to worry about accidentally switching levels/modes when clicking the switch. Tactile feedback is good with average tension and travel. The entire light is anodized in Type 3 anodized finish which is smooth and consistent throughout. No blemishes or other defects to be found.

Bezel/Head: The Olight M20 has a removable stainless steel crenellated bezel up the front which both protects the head and also works as a defensive tool. When the bezel is unscrewed, the head doesn't look like it's missing anything because the bezel threads are on the inside of the head. The glass lens used is of good quality and well AR-coated, when compared to regular glass you will clearly see the difference. Sitting behind he lens is a medium textured aluminum reflector with a well-aligned LED sitting at the bottom. The exterior of the head has some nice machining touches which help with grip for twisting the head. This is useful since the levels/mode changes are done via head twists as with all other Olights. Threads on the head are cleanly cut and smooth with no issues encountered during tests.

Output:The OLight M20 provides 3 brightness levels and a strobe mode, cycled through by a loosening/tightening of the head. The M20 reviewed here is the Premium edition which uses a higher flux, R2-bin XR-E LED as opposed to a Q5-bin LED used in the regular M20. The levels for the respective high, medium and low levels are well chosen to provide good variations of brightness and should be useful in varied applications. The beam profile has a narrow spot surrounded by a bright corona, and a pretty clean spill beam with minimal artifacts. Color temperature falls on the warm side, with my sample having a noticeably yellow hue. Runtime is very good considering the output it provides with regulation being maintained better with higher voltage battery configurations. The M20 will start to blink once every 20 seconds once output drops to about 30% from initial brightness to warn to user.

Switch: The switch is a rubber covered clickie and is fully recessed in the tailcap which allows the light to stand on end and be used as an electric candle. Despite the fact that the switch is recessed, it is very easy to use. Click on, click off. You can lock-out the switch by unscrewing the tailcap 1/2 turn. This will prevent accidental activation when packing the light in your backpack or luggage.

Batteries: For batteries, this light is approved by the manufacturer for use with two 18650 2200mAh AW Li-Ion rechargeable batteries or three CR123 1500mAh.once M30 add with an extension tube, it is able to add four CR123 1500mAh.

To change out the battery: unscrew the head, drop out the old cell, place in new cell observing proper polarity. Reattach the head and you're ready to go.

Accessories: Several accessories are included with the light.

What I Liked:Machining and construction are excellent, as with its finishing. Bright output with good runtime. Practical holster design. Switch feels secure and provides good tactile feedback.

What I Didn't Like: Slightly uncomfortable to hold with clip and grip ring installed.

Picky Little Things: None
