UPDATE APRIL 2006: Although not
exactly the same, this light is functionally identical
to the River Rock 2AAA found currently at Target. The
River Rock line is made by Nuwai and rebranded. I believe
the most significant difference is that the tailcap
switch looks a little smaller at the end of the tailcap,
and that's about it.
This is a very brief review of the Nuwai TM-311H is
a single LED 2 AAA powered pocket light. The LED in
this little monster is a little different from a 5mm
LED. It has several bond wires inside, indicating that
it is really several LEDs in one (more or less...).
It appears to be one of the new 8mm 100mA LEDs based
upon what I have seen HERE.
A step-up circuit is used to boost the power of the
two AAA batteries and a smooth reflector catches the
light and sends it forward in a smooth beam.
A plastic lens protects the front of the light, and
a clip on the side allows it to be clipped onto a hat
for hands-free use.
The switch is a tactical-type. Press in for momentary,
twist for constant on. Loosen 1 full turn to lock-out
the switch and prevent accidental activation.
Output is in the form of a wide beam with a concentrated
spot in the center. Color tinting is slightly bluish.
Output is greater than a single LED light powered by
a step-up circuit as a result of the 8mm LED essentially
having several LEDs packed into one.
Runtime Plot: Surprisingly long, reaching 50%
starting output after almost 9 hours and dropping off
rapidly after about 13 hours.
Runtime
completed with Rayovac brand batteries. More information
on runtime plots is available HERE.
There is an O-ring to help seal the tailcap. I would
give it a definite "splashable" rating, but
anything more may be pushing it. If it gets wet inside
just disassemble and let it dry.
What I Liked: Bright output, convenient shirt-pocket
size.
What I Didn't Like: Nothing significant
Other Things I Noticed:
Conclusions: Convenient penlight-size pocket
light. Quite bright for its size. Surprisingly long
runtime. Very good utility light and produces great
output for it's size.
