Short
Description:
The Nite-Ize FlashFlight is available from PocketLights.com
and is a fun lighted flying disk designed for nighttime
play. Available in green, blue, or red (reviewed) illumination
colors the FlashFlight is highly visible at night. The
light from a single LED in the center of the disk is
transmitted to the edges by nine fiber optic cables.
In flight the disk appears to be a solid wafer of light.
The entire body of the FlashFlight is translucent white
plastic with no external printed markings which would
subdue the illumination.

Detailed
Information:
This review is a little different from most in that
this particular item isn't really a flashlight, a marker,
or anything else but a fun toy. It has the classic shape
of a of a high quality flying disk, and weighs 188 grams
by my scale, making it a good general purpose disk.
The battery (or batteries, in the case of the blue and
green LED models) is stored in a pop-open compartment
in the bottom center of the disk, which also serves
as the switch. Twisting the switch turns the LED on
and off. Popping off the cover allows for a battery
change.
The LED is pointed at the end of an array of plastic
fiber optic cables. These cables stretch down the length
of the inside of the disk and are protected by plastic
channels in which they rest.
So how does it perform? Quite nicely, actually! It
is well balanced and has good flight characteristics,
just like a regular flying disk. At night it is HIGHLY
visible when the LED is turned on. Unfortunately, your
surroundings are generally not highly visible at night,
so it would be a good idea to play in an area with at
least some ambient light so you don't stick your foot
in a woodchuck hole, or run into a tree, or fall over
a slope... Actually, I think it's just a matter of time
before someone playing with one of these disks shows
up on Americas Funniest Videos! Speaking of AFV, why
do people still buy piñatas? Well, never mind.
The FlashFlight is a must-have fun toy for nighttime
play, and should keep the kids (and adults) well occupied
at dusk for quite some time. Just don't forget the video
camera!
