Light Type: LED
Light Class: Pocket / Keychain

Short Description:

The Photon II Microlight by LRI is designed to be a very small and bright pocket light. They come in various colors and use different batteries depending on the color of the LED used. The white light has a bluish tint typical of Nichia white LEDs. The batteries are lithium coin type. The case is a glass-filled polyurethane that is very tough and durable. The large pad on top of the light can be pressed with a thumb for a momentary light, while the tiny switch near the bulb can be clicked in place for a "constant on" option. The light comes with 2 split rings for attaching to a keychain or lanyard. The case is opened using 4 tiny screws on the back. Removing the screws causes the case to open along the long axis in clamshell fashion.

Reviewer's Impressions:

By far one of the smallest and lightest pocket lights available. So light it doesn't even seem to exist when placed on a keychain. They are very bright to start, but with no voltage regulation circuitry they dim considerably as they get used.

The batteries are replaceable, but the screws are so tiny - size 0 Phillips - it can be a real chore. The batteries are a readily available coin type. The white light runs on 2 x 2016 batteries for about 12 hours, growing dim throughout the batteries' serviceable life.

The light is not even water resistant. Water will simply pour in the light around the slider switch on the top. If it gets wet you can "spin dry" the light by hooking the keychain on a long lanyard and spinning it above your head. Even better would be to open the light and coat all the internal parts with a thin coat of dielectric grease to give it some degree of water repellence.

The slider switch is tiny and you need to use a fingernail to turn it on and off. This may not work too well for some people. The switch can get "loose", requiring the user to open the case and bend the contacts.

Comes in a wide variety of colors but only white allows full spectrum vision (best for distinguishing colors).

The LED is exposed and may be subject to damage if dropped. It can be protected using a short length of 5mm clear aquarium tubing cut slightly longer than the LED and slid over the top of the LED.

Update: I'm bumping this up to 3 Stars (from an original 2 Stars) just because it's so darn handy.

+ + + Pluses: Very tough, Good light up close, Lightweight

- - - Minuses: Not water resistant, Tiny constant on switch, Requires tools to change batteries, battery change difficult in general
