Short Description:

The InReTech Super 6 is a replacement bulb for the MagLight 3-D flashlight. It is available from InReTech either installed in a MagLight or by itself. The replacement bulb reviewed employs 6 white Luxeon Star LED emitters attached to a module that includes a significant heatsink block and has contacts for insertion into the MagLight bulb socket. The purpose of this modification is to provide the user with a bright light source that produces a wide flood of light for close to medium range use. The module is available in a variety of different Luxeon Star colors, and in a variety of different MagLight case colors.

The module itself consists of the emitters attached to a a beefy heatsink block, a circuit board resting above the emitters with holes for the emitter elements to protrude, and a screw-in interface for the Maglight bulb socket. Insertion into the Maglight is rather simple - remove the lens cap, remove the reflector, unscrew and remove the bulb holder, remove the bulb. Screw the head of the light to its lowest position, screw in the module and reattach the lens and cap. The MagLight retains its original water resistance.

The 6 Luxeon Star emitters produce a even flood of light in a nearly 180 degree pattern. The light has a very slight greenish tint.

The module runs on the original 3 D cells and will produce light for about 2 hours.

Reviewer's Impressions:

The InReTech Super 6 is what I would call an "unconventional" but very effective use of Luxeon Star LED emitters as replacements for incandescent bulbs. Instead of trying to duplicate the effect of an incandescent bulb in the 3-D mag, the folks at InReTech have decided to convert the light into a real "flood light". The output is in the form of a smooth flood that can illuminate a very large surface very evenly.

Fit and finish of the module is very good. The board appears to be professionally done and the heatsink block should be heavy and large enough to handle the heat produced by Luxeon Star emitters that are driven at 4.5 volts. Placing the circuit board above the emitters is a unique feature that allows solid contact between the emitters and the heat sink, and keeps the board from being affected as much by the heat generated. The contacts at the bottom of the module have been updated since its original inception and now screw down into the bulb socket forming a very solid contact. Quality seems quite good and durability is excellent.

As mentioned before, output is in the form of a VERY wide flood. This module will light up everything in front of the flashlight with a nice smooth light. Although not very bright in any particular spot, the module produces a great deal of light overall.

Most other features that would be reviewed would pertain to the light body, and since this is a retrofit, they do not apply.

If you need a very wide area flood light this is one to get. From lighting an entire room to allowing a much greater field of view when out walking, the InReTech Super 6 is a good choice. Upgraded to 4 Stars for a myriad of improvements in the original design.
