(Lamp Module and Head - Shown installed on a Surefire
C2 tactical light)
The G&P Luxeon V LED modules are direct replacements
for Surefire lights using a P60 lamp assembly. This allows you
to convert your high output Surefire light to a shockproof and
very bright LED
light. Note that output is diminished relative to the
standard lamp assembly, but not by much!
Any light that is factory designed to take the P60
form factor should accept these modules. This includes
Surefire models: 6P, G2,
C2, G2Z, NRA, M2,
and possibly others I may have skipped.
Basically what we have here is a complete replacement
head which includes a glass lens, crenelated bezel ring,
reflector, a regulation buck circuit to drop the 6V
output from the batteries down to an acceptable level
for the LED and provide constant output for several
hours, a Luxeon V high output LED, and a polarity protection
plate on the end of the positive spring. You can remove
the LED module if you want to try to put it in your
own head, but it is LONGER than the normal P60 module,
so it won't fit quite right. Be warned! Just replace
the whole head instead. Why would it be made longer?
By using a longer reflector, there is no annoying "doughnut
hole" in the center of the beam which is common
with Luxeon V lights.
Two types are available - the regular model and a
model for the Surefire G2 and the G2Z. The G2/G2Z model
has an extra contact ring included which needs to be slipped
over the spring so that it rests around the spring between the inside
of the head and the contact plate. This extra contact
ring provides an electrical path for the G2 models.
The bezel will tighten
down all the way with the ring in place.
This is by far the simplest drop-in replacement LED
module I've worked with yet, even simpler than the Luxeon
III offered by the same company. Remove your old head
and replace it with this one. Voila! If you want to
remove the actual LED module from the included head and
try it in your own light, simply remove the bezel ring and
drop it out of the front of the head. Remember,
the module is longer than a standard P60 and as a
result it may not fit correctly. I did notice that
there is no O-ring on the bezel end of the module head, so
the waterproof integrity of your Surefire is compromised by
using this module. Splashes are OK, but I'd avoid dunking.
Polarity protection plate on end of + contact spring,
G2 extra contact ring.
The reflector is textured just like the original P60
module to provide a smooth outer spillbeam of light
with a nice concentrated hotspot in the center. Since
the lamp assembly uses an LED instead of an incandescent
bulb, it is virtually shockproof. Feel free to beat
the snot out of your light if you wish, the LED will
be fine.
Output is in the form of a simply gorgeous spot of
even bright white light. This shot was taken with the module
installed on a Surefire C2, but the beamshot would appear
the same from any light since the head, lens, reflector
and bulb are all one unit.
Picture taken at 1 meter, Note the lack of a doughnut hole in the center!
Runtime
completed with Battery Station batteries. More information
on runtime plots is available HERE.
The module will accept 6 volts per the packaging. The
supplier states that the modules work with Pila
rechargeable cells, which has yet to be confirmed.
What I Liked: Good output, Easy
installation, Similar runtime to a P60 but is regulated, Smooth beam
What I Didn't Like: No O-ring seal
found at bezel/lens end.
Other Things I Noticed:
Conclusions: An excellent !!! replacement
for the P60 lamp module if you are looking for an easy
LED replacement that provides relatively constant output
over the regular runtime of a P60. Output is diminished
a tiny bit over a normal P60, but the you don't have
to worry about the bulb blowing or the light dimming
dramatically until after a full hour of use! I have
the BugOutGear Luxeon 3
modules permanently installed in a Brinkmann
Maxfire LX, and a Surefire
G2. This new Luxeon V module will have a permanent
home in my Surefire C2.
Since one of these modules only cost about as much as
four P60 lamps, and since it should never need replacing,
I don't see any reason NOT to get one for your Surefire
light from a cost-benefit perspective unless you commonly
use the light in very wet environments.
