I just received this little "practical novelty"
from a friend for the holidays and I thought I would
share it with you. It's called a "Glowbrick"
and it comes from Suck.UK.com.
What is it???: It's a lightbulb drilled out
and filled with plastic made with Strontium Aluminate.
Strontium Aluminate is a 8-10 hour glow-in-the-dark
substance. The bulb was then encased in an acrylic block.
What do you do with it??? You set it on your
nightstand, or anywhere else you like where it gets
some decent light and then you turn out the lights!
It glows surprisingly bright if you leave it under a
lamp for about 5 minutes. 8 hours later it's just a
dull glow, but you can still see it quite clearly. Here
is a photo without any after-photo digital enhancements
using the "nighttime" setting on my camera
which approximates darkness adapted eyes.
It is quite heavy at 28.6 oz and, measures
about 8cm x 8cm x 11cm. For size reference, the light
bulb inside the brick is the same size as a real regular-sized
light bulb.
Conclusions: Very cool and surprisingly
bright! Great conversation piece and also a great powerless
night-light. Note that it does have pointed corners,
so use appropriate caution to protect children (or clumsy
adults) who may fall and injure themselves on it.
