Light Type: Incandescent
Light Class: Rough Use/Outdoors

Short Description:

The DoubleBarrel is produced by Energizer. This light consists of an aluminum body with an attached plastic bezel/switch assembly and plastic battery cover at the base. It gets its name from the fact that there are 2 battery tubes in the aluminum body. Each tube takes 2-AAA batteries in the model tested. The light can run with either one or both of the battery tubes filled. Adding a second pair of batteries in the second tube increases the runtime of the light.

The aluminum section of the light currently anodized in 3 different colors: Red, Silver, or Blue. On either side of the aluminum body are rubber grips held in place with double-faced tape. The bezel/switch section is a fairly hard plastic and the bezel is adjustable for focus. The reflector is partially faceted down by the bulb. The bulb is a Xenon bi-pin. The switch is covered with a rubber diaphragm and all assembly points appear to be sealed with rubber O-ring. The top of the bezel cover has small round projections to protect the lens if the light is set down on its bezel. These also allow you to see light coming out from under the upside-down bezel if the light is turned on when it is set down on its face. The lens is clear plastic.

The batteries are accessed by unscrewing a thumbscrew on the base that allows the battery compartment cover to come off. This exposes the two tubes for battery insertion. Batteries are not included. The battery cover includes a lanyard hole.

Reviewer's Impressions:

The construction of this light is fairly sturdy, beam is pretty good, and it is a very "back pocketable" shape due to the side-by-side positioning of the 2 battery tubes.

I have found these lights to be very useful for Luxeon Star conversions - See the "Mods" section of this website for reference.

The light beam is adjustable, and like a MagLight, there are some fairly heavy rings that appear when the focus is opened up. This is diminished to some degree by the faceting on the reflector.

This light is pretty well built and should easily take a pounding from being tossed into a toolbox, etc.

The light seems a little large for running on AAA batteries, and the light output is about equivalent to a standard 2-AA battery light, perhaps a bit "whiter" as a result of using a xenon bulb.

Runtime is going to be less than a standard 2-AA battery flashlight. 4-AAA batteries do not have as many mAh available to power the bulb as 2-AA batteries. From the standpoint of runtime, this light probably would have been better designed to handle 2-AA batteries instead of 4-AAAs.

With the number of O-rings found throughout the body of this light, it can easily withstand a rainstorm or a dunking without water getting in.

A good "slightly better than average" general use light.

+ + + Pluses: Adjustable focus, Water resistant, tough

- - - Minuses: Dims somewhat rapidly, a little big for a AAA light, Battery change thumbscrew could be difficult to turn for some people, Beam quality OK but not great
