Short Description:

The Brunton Firelight is essentially a windproof high-temperature butane lighter with a single 3mm LED added on to the end of the unit. Twist (loosen) the end cap and the LED light comes on. The LED compartment is sealed with an o-ring and runs on two 1220 coin cell batteries.

Detailed Information:

The Brunton Firelight is really a lighter more than anything. Now I don't review lighters, but this one is really nice.

The body of the Firelight is (or appears to be) lacquered metal of some sort. There is a clear window around the center of the lighter so you can see the level of the butane gas in the chamber. The lighter part works by pressing on a button to open the cap, then pressing on the igniter to turn it on. A coil resting in the center of the flame chamber incandesces and illuminates the top of the lighter and the gas chamber.

On the bottom of the unit is the LED light. Really all it consists of is a pair of batteries, a pressure switch, and a 3mm white LED. Loosening the base of the lighter releases pressure on the switch and the LED turns on. The LED module becomes very loose when turned on, so hold onto it. Otherwise it may unscrew the rest of the way by itself and fall off the lighter.

Output from the LED is rather dim. Just enough in a pinch for you to find your dropped keys under the car, etc. Wide directional flood of bluish tinted light.

Output from the lighter is really cool:

The flame causes a coil to glow white hot (like an incandescent light bulb) and the light illuminates the lighter.

The LED unit is sealed against the base of the lighter with a large O-ring to prevent the entry of water. I'd give it a "splashable" overall.

The LED unit takes two 1220 coin cell batteries for power. There is a little U shaped contact that is pivoted out of the way to change the batteries. No tools are required.

Included in the package is a rubber strap that attaches around the center of the lighter. The strap has a square loop which serves as an attachment point for retention.

What I Liked: Easy battery change, Lighter works well.

What I Didn't Like: LED module can easily continue to unscrew and fall off when turned on.

Other Things I Noticed:

Conclusions: Fun little dual-purpose device. Even if you don't use the LED, the lighter is really nice.
