Detailed
Information:
Installation of these modules is very simple and the
result is an incredibly bright light in a very familiar
package.
First, disassemble your Minimag completely:
Remove the head and disassemble. Keep
the lens and the o-ring in place, remove the reflector
and set aside. It will no longer be needed. Remove the
bulb from the front of the light (also no longer needed)
and remove the plate that says "Do Not Remove".
You will hear the switch mechanism fall loose inside
the body of the light. Remove the tail cap and drop
out any parts found. You will not need the retainer
plate or the swtich mechanism.
Place the included o-ring in the lens
ring and then place the included lens on top of the
o-ring, flat side against the ring. Make sure it is
centered and screw the lens ring back onto the head.
Drop the BB or MM module into the body
tube, LED first. It will slide down to the front of
the tube.
Re-attach the head of the light.
The light is now ready to go. Drop in
batteries as you would normally and operate as you would
normally. Twisting the head will turn the light on and
off. You lose the ability to focus the light. Just turn
the head until it comes on and you're all set.
The BadBoy module uses current regulation
to supply the Luxeon with power for about 2 hours on
alkalines at a constant brightness level. The MadMax+
R2H (Wide Open) uses voltage regulation to run about
1 hour on alkalines at a constant brightness level.
Greater runtimes can be achieved using lithium AA batteries.
NiMH batteries are also great to use in these lights
due to the cost savings of using rechargables and the
fact that the boost circuits in the modules are capable
of compensating for the lower voltages found in rechargable
batteries.
The MadMax+ R2H (Wide Open) is about twice
as bright as the BadBoy 400. Output is in the form of
a smooth beam with a brighter center.
What I Liked: Takes a plain-jane
Minimag and turns it into a really bright light. Assembly
is very easy.
What I Didn't Like: When changing
the batteries, the module tends to drop out as well.
Be careful you don't lose it when you change the batteries!
Other Things I Noticed: The high
dome Luxeon in the MadMax+ R2H (Wide Open) produces
a square beam with an off-center hotspot. This is pretty
typical of high dome Luxeon lights.
Conclusions: Got a Minimag? Get
one of these! The step-up in brightness is incredible
and it still runs on cheap alkaline AA batteries. Well
worth it.
